“Hi! My name is Alana and I would like to tell you about life before HEARTH.
My entire life revolved around a bus schedule. It wasn’t always like this.
I recently left my husband because his abuse became intolerable. When I realized my young children were seeing this happen, that was the breaking point.
My new day began at 5am. After breakfast, I walked half a mile to the bus stop with my two children to get them to child care. It took two buses and three transfers to arrive there, then I took two more buses to work. At 4pm I repeated the whole routine. My days were so exhausting that I barely managed to keep it all together.
Every day I worried… about my schedule; if buses run behind, I’d be late picking up from daycare, and there was a financial penalty for that. I worried about where we would sleep at night; we were homeless and staying with a different friend every week. I needed a better paying job, but with only a high school diploma my options were limited, and I could only work weekdays between available child care hours. I was really scrambling and didn’t know where to turn.
Then I discovered HEARTH.
